Greensboro Oyster Roast – Safe at Home

Honorary Chair: Leslye Tuck

With the safety of our guests as our top priority and with the uncertainty of large gatherings in the future, we have made the difficult decision to cancel and not reschedule the 2020 Greensboro Oyster Roast.

To continue meeting the needs of clients, we are launching a campaign entitled Oyster Roast – Safe at Home. Our agency has remained open during the pandemic and is working in new ways to keep local families safe and healthy.

Even though we are unable to come together for a live event, we are relying on the support of our friends in the Greensboro area to help meet the community’s ongoing needs. Your participation as a Host or Sponsor is more important – and more appreciated – than ever!

About the Oyster Roast

The 2019 Oyster Roast raised more than $343,000 to support Family Service’s programs in Greensboro. Last year the agency directly served 19,555 local children and adults, at its offices or in clients’ own homes, and touched the lives of thousands more through its community outreach and education programs.

Safe at Home

This year, we are encouraging our supporters to remain Safe at Home. However, we know that many in our community are not so safe. In fact, the issues that we address – domestic violence, child abuse, mental health and financial stability – are only worsened by social isolation and economic struggle:

  • Domestic Violence – calls to law enforcement for domestic disturbances are up by approximately 30%. Victims are often stuck at home with their abusers, unable to formulate a safe plan of escape.
  • Child Abuse – professionals who work directly with children (including teachers, and Family Service’s caseworkers) are normally able to keep an eye out for warning signs of abuse or neglect. Now, their contact with children is severely limited.
  • Mental Health – social isolation can lead to depression, anxiety, grief or stress. Family relationships are strained, and workers may be facing long hours under difficult circumstances.
  • Financial Stability – everyone is impacted by the economic slowdown; many have lost their jobs or are unable to pay bills on time. Mortgage delinquencies are on the rise.

Hosts and Sponsors

Individual Hosts and Sponsors will be recognized on the Oyster Roast program, taking the place of the usual event invitation (mailed to 2,600 homes in the Greensboro area).

Hosts and Sponsors may choose to display an Oyster Roast yard sign showing their support.

Sponsors at the Bronze level and above will also be recognized on the Family Service of the Piedmont website and social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter & LinkedIn) and in the Family Service newsletter (mailed to 3,500 individuals, businesses and organizations throughout Guilford County). Top sponsors will be acknowledged in media coverage.

All other donations are gratefully accepted.

Sign up as a Host or Sponsor by June 15th to be listed in the Oyster Roast Program.
